Sharjah’s first artificial nest constructed for Ospreys
The Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA) has initiated an innovative project aimed at creating artificial nests for ospreys, with the objective of safeguarding their habitat, wildlife, and promoting biodiversity conservation.
The inaugural nest of this initiative has been established in the Sir Bu Nair Island Reserve. Plans are underway to introduce additional artificial nests in various coastal regions throughout Sharjah, including several nature reserves. This initiative offers a secure and appropriate environment for ospreys to nest, particularly during their breeding season, which occurs from December to March.
Surveillance cameras will be linked to these nests to enable tracking and monitoring of osprey populations, behaviors, flight patterns, and food. The artificial nest project is the first nest in the United Arab Emirates to be registered on the Osprey Watch initiative’s platform. This international project was started by experts and environmentalists with the goal of gathering large amounts of data to aid in environmental decision-making.
